1. AEROSPACE ENGINEER: From selling newspaper at railway stations, he went on to study Aerospace Engineering from MADRAS INSTITUTE of TECHNOLOGY.
2. JOINING DRDO: After successful completion of engineering, he joined DRDO ( Defence Research and Development Organisation ), a mammoth task in itself.
3. SLV-III: ISRO appointed him project director of SLV-III mission ( Indias first satellite launch programme ).
4. ROHINI: India successfully launched satellite ROHINI in 1980 under his guidance.
5. CHIEF SCIENTIFIC ADVISER: In 1992, Dr Kalam was appointed Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister of India.
6. POKHARAN-II: India sent out a loud and clear signal of its military strength by conducting Pokharan-II nuclear test under Dr Kalam's directorship.
7. KALAM-RAJU STENT: Along with cardiologist Soma Raju, Dr Kalam invented a low-cost coronary stent named ‘ Kalam – Raju stent '.
8. MISSILE MAN of INDIA: Dr Kalam played a major role in developing missiles AGNI ( an intermediate range ballistic missile ) and PRITHVI ( surface-to-surface missile ) for India. Since then, he became the missile man of India.
9. The BHARAT RATNA: Dr Kalam received Padma Bhushan in 1981, Padma Vibhusan in 1990 and Indias highest civilian honour- The Bharat Ratna in 1997 for his excellent service in the field of science & technology.
10.PEOPLE’s PRESIDENT: From being born to a poor fisherman family, he went on to serve his nation, INDIA, as its 11th President ( 25 July 2002 – 25 July 2007 ). He is popularly known as peoples president.
